Project name: r4sa

Project type: Local – Surveillance

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The CAPEX plan submitted to and approved by the Regulator and the users in 2003 identified the need for the replacement of existing older radars such as the Johannesburg and the Sutherland en-route radars. This is due to the normal replacement cycle and age of the radars. The replacement of the existing en-route radar at Johannesburg with an approach radar will allow the reduction in separation in the terminal area from the current 5nm to 3nm with the associated capacity increase.

A need was furthermore identified for a second approach radar at Cape Town in order to provide improved radar redundancy and reduced radar separation with a resulting increase in capacity.

The Sutherland primary radar has reached the end of its useful life and has been withdrawn from service. It will not be replaced, as a primary radar service is not required for en-route surveillance.

The primary radars at FAEL and FAPE will be replaced with new approach radars as part of an extension of the project r4sa contract. A TCU will be installed at FAEL. In addition all the current Thales radars will be upgraded to include time stamping.

PROJECT SCOPE

New approach radars consisting of co-mounted primary and secondary Mode S surveillance radars will be installed at FAJS, FACT, FAEL and FAPE.

The Sutherland secondary surveillance radar will be replaced with a Mode S secondary surveillance radar (due to the age and slow turning rate of the sensor).

A TCU will be installed at FAEL (to display the tracks from the radar sensor).

All the current Thales radars will be upgraded to include time stamping.

The scope includes additional works like:

  • Civil works like building upgrades and refurbishing and site preparations for the temporary systems at Sutherland and Johannesburg
  • Electrical power
  • Air conditioning
  • Fire Protection
  • Communications Infrastructure
  • Radome works
  • New radar tower and infrastructure facilities at Cape Town, East London and Port Elizabeth Redeployment and adaptation of the mobile system
  • Professional fees
  • Flight trials
